Sea Salt Scrub at home

I don't know about you but I LOVE it when I go to Spas and I get nicely scrubbed especially with sea salt. There's something very natural about it. I also love it when they put a ginger wrap which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy ..

Recently, I discovered this product and it's been great - the best of both worlds and I can do it in the shower 2-3 times a week. It's a Made in Malaysia Sea Salt Scrub with Ginger Root Oil.

ANOTHER spa opened its doors in Bangsar recently and many flocked to try the services offered.
The 100-odd people included MCA vice-president Datuk Donald Lim, who was the guest of honour.
Despite the many spas in the area, owners Lilian Lim and Jamie Yeap are confident that Aurora The Art of Massage will do well in the neighbourhood.
“We are aware of the competition, in fact we welcome it,” said Lim.

“We chose Bangsar because of the locality, the convenience and the need for more spas in the city,” Lim said.
But she was quick to add that Aurora has its own selling point and that is their Hot Stone therapy which is something they are proud of.
“The secret lies in the method – we do it differently here. We adopt the Chinese way of doing it and coupled with our secret blend of massage oils, the experience is very different,” she said.
Indeed Aurora’s method of placing and arranging hot stones along the energy centres of the body is believed to help to relax the muscles and reduce pain and discomfort while boost the healing process.
Another selling point, according to Lim, is that the Aurora massage therapy is specially catered for people on the go.
“We have a series of massages catering to the sport and fitness community as well as those who are very active at work and constantly on the go,” said Lim.
“It relieves muscle cramps and returns the body to a relaxed state and energises the body. We think that KL needs something like this and we are here to offer that service,” Lim said.

The outlet has 11 rooms including VIP rooms for added comfort. The ambience oozes comfort and style and guests are also treated to a complimentary drink of their choice.

NESTLED within Ampang in Kuala Lumpur is a little slice of the Greek Islands. Tucked away, Mu and I, to use its own tagline, is a “boutique experience” spa incorporating a beach house experience of Mykonos or Santorini with brilliant white walls and cerulean accents that make you wonder if you haven’t just stepped halfway round the world.

Established by Sharon Teh and her business partner, Mu and I was envisioned as a place where patrons can relax, revitalise and indulge. And indulge they do, being groomed in an environment that is bright, relaxing and anything but clinical.

Although far from being just a nail spa, they are nevertheless famous for their manicures and pedicures, and with good reason.

In fact, as I write this, I have to keep myself from admiring my nails.

My manicurist was a lovely woman named Geraldine who seemed to know everything I'd ever read about proper nail care.

While she sterilised her tools, I moaned about my cuticles having been cut by overzealous manicurists and the subsequent infections that led me to shun most nail bars.

Geraldine tutted and shook her head. She told me each person's nails are different and that it isn’t necessary to clip away at the protective cuticle. I remember reading this in magazines. Geraldine merely gently pushed my cuticles back instead.

I’m sure, like me, you've also perused beauty advice columns and wondered why when the professionals advice against a particular thing, like having your scalp scraped by fingernails in a hair wash or your hair dried with an incredibly hot blow-dryer, salon assistants nevertheless do just that.

Not the case this time, though. Geraldine massaged my pre-soaked nails and gently scraped away old layers so that my nails were gleaming naturally, completely happy to be looking the way they were meant to.

Geraldine and the other staff at Mu and I are not the type who have surly conversations with their colleagues while you sit there squirming uncomfortably, wondering what they're saying about your state.

Instead, she was more than happy to recommend what I could do at home to prolong the life of help me pick a colour that would complement my two-piece swimsuit after I confessed that I have holiday planned.

I changed my mind about my choice of colour at least five times. Ordinarily this drives everyone else around me half mad, but not her.

In the end, Amy, another customer who was also getting her nails done, showed me her colour and I liked it so much I chose it too — “The Grape Lakes”. Geraldine recommended “Tropical Punch” for my toes. Sharon dropped by to see which colours we were getting.

When talking about how she set up the spa, something Sharon mentioned stuck with me, “You are nothing without your staff.” It is such an overlooked aspect despite our Asian sensibilities of politeness and service and yet it is incredibly true.

I’ve never seen more relaxed workers than at Mu and I’s. It’s just the way things are run, with members of the staff have their own client base and are thanked by name.

After 10 years in advertising, Sharon wanted to create a place that was an extension of her personality, something which would nourish people and restore what they'd lost surviving city life.

This idea is carried through out from the location to the general approach. Mu and I is accessible and fun. The comfort level is constantly monitored, so that it is not too cold or the music too jarring because Sharon believes that “the details are everything”.

Apart from fantastic manicures and pedicures, they also offer body therapy. The massage is a blend of Swedish, Shiatsu, and Malay with some focus on pressure points.

An oil massage, their base oil is an odourless blend of almond, jojoba and vitamin E. Some of her clients though have specific ailments and for this they’ve concocted an assortment of options.
For example, the “Relaxing” blend has additions of lavender oil added to the base oil. My masseuse was Abelle, who found knots in my back I didn’t even know I had.
Abelle is another member of staff who possess her own cult following.

Earlier she’d performed a Hot Stone therapy for a client who needed to relax and sought relief from muscular aches.

Hot stone therapy is one of the better ways to help blood circulation while stimulating the nervous system.

The stones, when heated and placed on certain points of the body, allow blood vessels to expand. They can be very comforting once you’ve decided on the temperature that best suits you.
Afterwards, if you want to extend the calm feeling all the way home, you can purchase aromatherapy oils from the same range carried by Mu and I.

Aromatherapy oils have more benefits than just helping you to relax.
Lavender, for example, also kills germs and prevents colds, not to mention inducing a good night’s sleep. But to really feel the full benefits a massage has to offer, it’s recommended that you devote yourself to a few regular treatments.

Understanding this, Mu and I offers a package where, after five body therapy treatments, the sixth one is on the house.

Sharon makes it a point to be around to catch up with everyone, and is a mine of information on which oils may work best for you.

The aromatherapy range also has body butter and atomising sprays, so you can keep smelling lovely and feeling silky smooth well after you’ve left.

If you happen to be suffering from a nasty hangover, there is also a special treatment exclusive to Mu and I called “Hair of the Dog” which is worth checking out. It’s designed to take the edge of that piercing migraine.

Honestly, a girl could get use to this kind of thing.

It's been a really long time since I've enjoyed an indulgance at the spa out of town. These days I normally go for foot reflexology, acupuncture or short sports massage - not really for relaxation but for a purpose.

Finally got some time to take a mini-break and went to Phuket. Stayed at Cape Panwa, which was really really nice and relaxing (even if the place was filled with 99.9% gwailos), away from Patong area and just nothing but sea, beach and coconut trees.

Turns out they also opened a spa recently, Cape Spa. The good news is that they are offering all in-house guests 20% discount but even better was because I took the Hotel Package, I was entitled to 50% off all treatments!!! Yoo Hoo! That's SO good news to my pocket!

The spa was absolutely gorgeous and I tried the 150 minute Exotique Andaman package (originally priced at Bt3000) which included a Aroma Foot Soak, Sauna/Steam, Black Sesame Body Scrub, Body Brush with Carnation Oil, Mud Wrap and finally an Aromatheraphy Body Massage.

This meant that I had this huge couples room which had a huge bath, attached bathroom, toilet and lovely wooden sauna/steam room, all to myself!

I think that rather than having spa treatments in the city, I would rather go on spa holidays. When I go to the spa on a normal day in the city, it feels like a short-lived experience because you might be stressed driving to the spa and after all relaxed and all, you have to get back into the car and drive home.

At a resort, after the spa treatment, I just went down to the beach, founbd a nice chair underneath the coconut tree, read my book and had a pina colada. Later, I just ambled back to the bedroom and flopped down on the nice comfy bed. It was truly relaxing.

Anyway, anyone looking for a mini-spa-break, the Cape Panwa is highly recommended and Air Asia flies there :) Thanks, Tony!

Healthland Spas in Bangkok

On my recent trip to Bangkok, I tried this Spa. The 2 hour Thai massage costs Bt450 which is very reasonable considering the ambiance and cleanliness of the place. I also tried theri Thai Herbal Compress (add Bt300) to the Thai Massage which was really good as the heat permeates through the tired body after a full day of shopping.

We were their last customers (they close at midnight) and as you wait for your shoes and tea in a line with all the other customers, I did feel a little like a Kobe Cow after his massage before being led to the slaughterhouse!

They also had some other treatments; facials, Japanese Tourmaline Sauna and many more and these were mainly Bt1000 and above. Worth going if one has the time.

Pamper Zone at Starhill Gallery is officially open, offering 50,000 sq ft of pure unadulterated pampering. YTL Corporation managing director, Tan Sri (Dr) Francis Yeoh hosted media and the creme of Kuala Lumpur's social scene at a soiree as a preview to the services available at Pamper Zone.

A total of about 200 guests were given a tour of the Pamper Zone at the boutiques and spas with newly appointed Pamper Zone Ambassador, Datin Seri Tiara Jacquelina, was also as well as the face of spas in YTL Hotels & Properties, Anita Sarawak.

Candles and curtains in purple and white enhanced the decor that was inspired by the legendary icons of beauty, the Egyptians. The lavish cocktail party with flowers bouquets, strewn flower petals and a string quartet providing soothing live music was a perfect setting to introduce women, and also men, to the wonderful services available at the 93 treatment rooms in Pamper Zone.

A warm welcome to today's much-awaited event, the launch of the latest experience that awaits visitors to Starhill Gallery. I must, right up front mention with great pride, that this floor is set to become an awesome oasis of wellness and beauty, it is indeed the largest urban retreat in the world. It is 50,000 sq feet of pure unadulterated pampering and spoiling and nourishing and beautifying. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the all-new Pamper Zone.

The launch of Pamper Zone comes close at the heels of the successes of the other experiences in Starhill, and serves to complete the loop in what makes for a successful, holistic retail institution - fashion, art, beauty, food and living.

Mentioning this serves to remind me of the speech I delivered in October 2004, when I launched the concept for the new Starhill. I described to you all how YTL was going to make some serious changes to the face of the retail industry in Malaysia and in the region. A new shopping facility was to be born, one that will redefine the shopping experience. Then in July last year, witnessed by the crme of society from all over the world symbolising Starhill's worldwide appeal, I made the announcement the new Starhill Gallery was officially open.

And today, as we stand just three months short of her first birthday, we see that Starhill Gallery has come far indeed. This fabulous shopping centre - nay, this monumental gallery of experiences - now plays home to some of the world's top brands and retail outlets, welcoming into our hallways people and names renowned the world over.

The beauty on the outside, thanks to the magic of New York-based architect David Rockwell, is surpassed only by the magnitude of what is contained inside. From top class eateries to designer labels of the highest order - in fact, Asprey is of Her Royal Highness, the Queen of England's order - we have even gone as far as to establish a floor just for timepieces. Adorn is yet another pride and joy of ours, establishing itself as THE Global Fine Watch Retailer.

Another differentiating factor we have within Starhill is the extension of the hotel culture, where service standards are taken to whole new levels for a mall. Several initiatives we have put into place in terms of amenities and service qualities already serve to carry out this task - our call centre has been very busy, as have our Concierge, who I know take extra pains to ensure a shopper's experience at Starhill is seamless and unfathomably pleasant.

Charting our progress thus far, it is clear that we have been very visionary in our crafting of Starhill as institution, by breaking several retail barriers. The first and foremost was of course the dissolution of the anchor department store concept. We were brave enough to take that stand because we genuinely believed that department stores didn't reflect what individual brands stood for. This has worked obviously, as Starhill now houses exclusively several flagship and concept stores for many global brands, giving them the chance to express themselves in an unbridled fashion.

We then invalidated a key retail rule we have all lived by for so long - that upper floors were inferior. We thought, why number them at all? Why not turn each floor into a unique experience? So we did. And in doing so, we ensured brands complemented, and not competed with each other - creating a much healthier retail environment for everyone. The result of course is what we see here today - a whole gallery of themed experiences, RICH experiences.

Subsequently when we spoke about our first themed floor, Feast Village, we were warned that Shook, one our most successful F&B establishments would suffer. But we knew about the strength and camaraderie that good neighbours can bring. Since Feast Village started operations, sales at Shook have shot up by 30%. Feast Village is now the toast of global discerning gourmands and hedonists.

And of course our gift to real estate - the Starhill Real Estate Investment Trusts. When we launched this in 2005, concerns were raised over its sustainability given the domestic property environment at the time. But the identity we had already carved for Starhill Gallery, Lot 10 and the JW Marriott was too strong - it defied all naysayers and grew to be a trailblazer in the REIT markets, yielding an unsurpassed 6% return rate. Units were oversubscribed 8.8 times, and 65% were snapped up by foreign investors from London, Hong Kong and Singapore, the very established quintessential retail cities.

But even with all these, we knew there was a final pillar that needed to be fleshed out in order to perfect that equation of landmark destination. The final seal on the deal to complete the loop of Starhill's overall offering - the launch of Pamper Zone. It is a one-of-a-kind facility, dedicated to the woman who knows how to take care of herself, who looks at beauty from not just the outside but from inside, and who deserves to feel special and loves to be treated. Angsana Spa - KL's best kept secret?

I had read that the Angsana Spa, part of the Banyan Tree group, had opened at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in KL earlier this year. However, they've been very quiet in their advertising so it slipped to the back of my mind until TT reminded me last week.

Anyhow, being the impatient one that I am and taking advantage of the public holiday this weeks, I booked us into the spa today.

I think the Angsana Spa has to be one of KL's best kept secrets. Situated on the 5th floor of the Crown Plaza Hotel (formerly known as Mutiara and formerly known as the KL Hilton before that), the Spa has over 20 rooms with 2 outdoor pavilions.

We booked ourselves in for the Essence of Angsana programme - Bliss and Essentials.

Bliss is a 180-minute session which includes a 30-minute body polish, 60-minute massage, 60 minute facial and a flower bath. G chose the Olive Plum Healer body polish which included plum powder and brown sugar in olive oil.

The Essentials programme included a 60-minute massage and 60-minute facial. I extended the massage to 90-minutes to co-incide with G's timing. I had the Ibu's Secret massage, which is a Balinese deep-tissue massage using my chosen Ylang Ylang oil. For the facial, I chose the Angsana Facial, which uses natural products. I can vouch for this because I could smell each product they used which included yoghurt, honey, almond, soya and milk. My skin feels so nice after that.

The other facials they have on offer (Euro Star, Cool Operator and Marma Point) all use commercial products.

I can't wait to go back again to try the Rainmist programme!

[Review] Divana Spa, Bangkok, Thailand

The best way to spend one's birthday is to have a day to yourself doing something you like. Well, that's just what happened to me this year. Firstly, I was in my favourite city, Bangkok. Secondly, I was to spend the weekend there!

Anyway, the day started of with a quick breakfast at Emporium before heading of for a 5 hour treat at Divana Spa.

I found Divana Spa over the internet. The reason I chose it and not Being Spa (which I have know about for a long while) or other hotel-based spas is because their treatments and products looked unique.

In the 5 hours++ we were there, we underwent the Spa Speciality Package which consisted of the following treatments:
Body Brush
Honey - aroma Cover
Herbal Steam
Body Scrub (I chose the Milky Chocolate one and remember at one point dreaming that I was in a vat of milk chocolate!)
Aloe Vera Rub
Body Mud
Body Massage
Bath (we chose the Thai Herbal one)
Anti-stress Facial Massage
Divana Foot Massage

The package also came with a light organic meal at the end consisting of organic salad, selection of sushi and pumpkin soup (which was a little off!) and local Thai orange juice. Throughout the program we were also given pandan water and herb tea at various times.

The Spa itself (we went to the main one at Sukhumvit 25 (behind the Glas Haus) which was a house. The setting was lovely, with lush gardens. The treatment rooms themselves were very welcoming.

The only things that I was a little unhappy about was:
1) in the double treatment rooms, the air cond wasn't powerful enough as the room was larger than the others
2) there is only one toilet in the house and it's downstrairs so if your treatment room is upstairs, then you have to walk down every time you want to go to the toilet

Overall, I had an excellent time though I do think that spending 5 hours was a very long time! I slept through most of it but by the 5th hour while I was having my facial, I admit I was getting a little restless.

The price was very reasonable for the package which was Bt5650 (approx RM560) for everything. If you don't want the organic meal at the end, they will give you an aromatheraphy burner in it's place.

They also own the Nibhana Spa at Lang Suan (Naturaville Apartments) but its more expensive than this one.

Highly recommended!

[Review] Andana Spa

RM150 for a day at the spa sounded too good to be true so I called up Jacq and asked her if she was interested in checking out Andana@Glenmarie with me. So, one fine Saturday, we both drove down in the mean green machine.

As you enter the Spa, there's not much of a reception. Just a small area with 2 counters - Ladies to the left and Gentlement to the right. After checking in, we both received our keys and was led through to the changing room. We were asked to change into a green top and bottom (you won't require any swimming attire here, they provide everything!), then have a shower (with the top and bottom on) and then enjoy the hot pool (with 4 deck chairs in it), cold pool (FREEZING!), sauna and steam room. Jacq and I were really hungry as we hadn't had our lunch yet so we ordered and lunch was served at the hot pool area.

After we finished with all the pools and stuff, we had another shower and got changed into a new dry top/bottom set. This time, we were also given a short yukata to put over it. All this time, there was a girl serving us and asking us if everything was ok. I wouldn't have minded if she left us alone a bit as we felt rather hurried.

Anyway, we were then led to the Lounge area. There is a Ladies only lounge (with 2 VIP rooms) and a mixed lounge (separated by a door). We didn't know this and headed on out to the mixed lounge. The mixed lounge is quite large with ceiling to floor windows overlooking the golf course. The lounge is partitioned into several areas which also have movies projected to the walls. The one thing I didn't like was that you can actually smoke there.

A Manager came to chat to us and told us that if no one had booked the VIP rooms in the Ladies area, we could use it. This was great news because the VIP lounge had leather recliner seats and that's where Jacq and I spent most of the day at, lounging around, napping and reading.

The package comes with ah 45-minute massage which you book when you get there. They're pretty good and I had a good hard shiatsu massage. The massuese actually climb on my back! You can also choose the aromatheraphy massage and if pay an additional fee, you can also double the time of the mssage to 90 minutes.

One of the best things about this spa is that the food is pretty good. It's free flow and all included in the entrance price. The juices were all freshly squeezed, not the stuff that comes out of bottles, and we feasted on Haagen-Daaz ice cream, fresh fruits to scallop porridge, udon noodles, chicken chop, etc. Actually, we didn't plan to stay that long but ended up having lunch, tea and dinner there too!

This spa is a great place to hang out and spend time with your friends. With the private suite, it's especially great if you're planning a girls day out, or Hen Party.

For additional fee, you can also do the facials, scrubs, mani and pedi, etc

Highly recommended!

Andana Spas - finally, the women have it too!

Attempts to start similar types for women (I remember Lady Sparadise in Menara Genesis) didn't pan out well but looks like there's hope .... with the new Andana Group ..

Over the Chinese New Year holidays, I checked out Dewi Sri Spa located in Plaza Damas. Ambience-wise, it's very nice inside and generally follows the whole Balinese theme. The receptionist and staff are very friendly and courteous. It appears however that one would have to communicate in BM/Indonesian generally, which might pose a problem for non-local patrons.

The interior is beautifully done. The reception area leads into a sort of courtyard with plants and a water feature. There are stairs leading to massage rooms upstairs. The massage room I was ushered into was nicely lit to just the right level of brightness (ie. not too bright, but not so dark that you end up accidentally stepping into the footbath, either!)

I opted for the lavender aromatherapy massage. Interestingly, the massage began with the masseuse scenting her hands with lavender essential oil and placing it directly under the massage table, at the spot where my head was resting. The lovely scent of lavender wafted up, which was really relaxing. The massage itself was great, if a little strong at first (I had to ask her to lighten her touch a little). The soft strains of gamelan music in the background also added a lot to the whole experience.

To top it off, a spicy hot cup of ginger tea was served after the massage, which my cousin and I sipped out in the mini-courtyard amidst the sounds of rippling water. I think I'll definitely check out some of the other treatments the next time.

I miss Bangkok!! I really do. It's been more than a year since my monthly sojourns to the asian City of Angels and I can't believe I've survived (well, barely!) so long.

One of the things I miss most is my regular visits to the the Thai massage place near the apartment I used to stay in. My almost (when I wasn't out exploring new culinary delights) daily after-work routine was to take the BTS (skytrain) from the office back to Silom station, stop by the Thai salad place to buy dinner, have dinner back at the apartment, watch some TV and relax, have a shower and then go to Body Tune (which was my favourite massage place on Silom Road) for a massage. 2 hours later, I would find my way back to the apartment in a nice relaxed stage and fall asleep.

The good news is, I can almost re-create this routine here in KL (ok, minus the skytrain - I have my own wheels, and minus the yam (salad) - unfortunately, haven't found a place in KL which serves all the various types of Thai salads). The answer is BodhiSense.

BodhiSense, a massage therapy place which specialises in the Thai massage with therapists from Thailand, is located in Plaza Damas in Sri Hartamas, not too far away from my office. They offer:

The resort is a dream project of Jaya and her husband who have similar such centres in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. And it was Kodandaram of M S Ramaiah group who made their dream come true in Bangalore.

From hypertension, arthritis, joint disorders, diabetes and head aches to obesity, back aches, asthma, skin diseases, insomnia and heart diseases, the health resort offers treatments for several conditions. As with all their other centres, Ayurdhama also emphasises on a holistic approach to treatment which involves the mind, body and the soul. People are generally divided into seven types – vata, pitta, kapha etc. “We start our treatment only after identifying the body type of the guest (as the patient is referred here) and assessing his/her current status of health. We have realised that it’s very important to take their lifestyle into consideration, or else they may go back to their old routine. For instance, we find out their dietary habits before preparing a diet plan for them. And keeping in mind their practices, geographic location and availability of substances, we chart a diet plan so that they can go back home and follow it without much effort,” explains Dr Ajay M R, the chief medical officer at the resort.

Located on the outskirts of Bangalore amidst a large number of trees and medicinal plants, the resort takes you one step close to nature. There’s a 2.9-km-long jogging path around the 38-acre plot which can be used for morning walks. Besides that, Ayurdhama also has a yoga and meditation centre. The health centre with facilities for sauna, jacuzzi and steam treatment is used to supplement ayurvedic treatments, but only with the permission of the practitioner.

With floating candles and flowers, fragrance of incense, and recliners (called appoopan kaseras in Kerala), the courtyards are just perfect for a relaxed evening. You could even take a swim at the pool or spend your evening with a book at the reading room. “But TV and mobile phones are a strict ‘no no’ here,” says Dr Ajay.

Ayurdhama has 20 cottages on offer. Accommodation is available in two categories (individual or twin sharing basis) to suit your preferences, but everything comes at a price. A stress buster programme (inclusive of all costs) for three days-two nights costs Rs 16,000 and Rs 28,000 on individual and twin sharing basis, respectively. “After all quality comes at a price and ours is a highly personalised service,” claims Dr Ajay. And his advice for a healthy life is the 14 days-13 nights stress management programme (Rs 56,000) once a year.

KSHAYADHAMA SOLUTIONS
*Abhyanga – It’s a complete body massage done simultaneously by two therapists. It reduces stress, aids blood circulation and relieves muscle and joint pain.

*Pathra Pinda Sweda (Kizhi) – The body is first massaged and then fomented with a bolus made of herbs and leaves dipped in warm oil. It’s good for spondylitis, spondylosis and arthritis.

*Kaya Seka (Pizhichil) – Warm oil is poured on the body with a gentle massage. It is effective in treating muscular disorders, nervous problems and multiple sclerosis.

A teach you the techniques of Bharadvajasana to help you cope with cancer.

Some of the yogasanas are found to be effective in treating cancers. Vakrasana and Bhujangasana are found to be good for breast cancer, Ardha-Cakrasana for throat cancer and Ardhasirsasna for cancers of the head and neck. These postures help in giving deep rest to the fighter cells that are in large number in these regions.

Meditation helps in strengthening White Blood Cells. Vignana Sadhana Kaushala is another technique which helps you cope with stress, and then no person or no situation can affect you. Anandamrita Sinchana is another yogic trick to overcome the fear of death by systematic analysis and training. The eight steps of this asana takes you to a state of absolute fearlessness. These techniques developed by the Indian seers are used by a large number of cancer patients in different stages of the disease. They are combined with conventional therapy for better results.

Bharadvajasana
This asana is devoted to Bharadvaja, the father of Drona who fought the great war of Mahabharata.

Technique
*Sit on the floor with the legs stretched straight in front (Dandasana).
*Flex the knees, move the legs back and bring both feet to the right side beside the hip.
*Rest the buttocks on the floor, turn the trunk about 45 degrees to the left, straighten the right arm and place the right hand on the outer side of the left thigh near the left knee. Insert the right hand underneath the left knee.
*Exhale, turn the left arm from the shoulder behind the back, bend the left elbow and with the left hand clasp the right upper arm above the right elbow.
*Turn the neck to the right and gaze over the right shoulder.
*Hold the position for half a minute with deep breathing.
*Loosen the hand grip, straighten the legs and repeat the pose on the other side.

Here, bring both the feet beside the left hip, turn the trunk to the right, straighten the left arm, place the left palm underneath the right knee and catch the left upper arm near the elbow with the right hand from behind the back. Stay in that position also for an equal length of time.

Note to self: Leave earlier from the city next time. Ok, so I got lost getting there, but I hate it when roads are not in grid but rather, quite circuitous and they all join up sometime or another.
Anyhow, the Putrajaya Shangri-La is located in one of the largest roundabouts I've seen and if you miss the turning, just go round again!!

I decided to take up their current offer of RM100++ for lunch or high-tea with a massage and full use of the pool and other spa facilities. This is excellent value and I have to thank JF for alerting me to it.

The spa is located right next to the pool and as the hotel is on a hill, there's a rather nice view from the infinity pool. The spa set up is really nice, with little paths meandering to the various treatment rooms. The couple treatment room that we used was really nice, with it's own pseudo open-air bath, shower and toilet.

All treatments start with a foot bath and scrub before they proceed to the massage. The masseuse were quite good and strong (just the way I like it) and the highlight of the Chi massage is when they place a singing bowl on the small of your back and then ring it! You can almost feel the tingling of the sound vibrate through your body. Of course, for me, it woke me up of a very deep slumber so I wasn't a very happy cat when I was awoken.

I must say that this spa rates as one of my favourites spas in the Klang Valley (or, should I say, Greater Klang Valley .. ok... a spa within a one hour driving distance from home!) and I will definitely visit it more often.

PS. You'll get a better experience if you stay overnight at the hotel, then it feels like you've been away and you don't have to spend so much time on the road.

OK ... I finally tried the famous Spa Indrani. Let's see ...

Ambience / Concept
The concept is quite good, convert old bungalow into a spa cum clubhouse kinda place with a really inviting swimming pool with huts dotted around it. Actually, it would be a great place for a wedding or any other kind of garden event .. but I digress.

Entering the front doors, I was greeted by a rather blur employee who looked like more like someone's maid than spa worker asking me, "Yes, can I help you? Oh .. you got appointment ah? OK ...er....let me check ah ...." Well, seeing this spa is NOT in some busy shopping area and the chances of me popping by are low and the fact that I had already made an appointment to come over at the appointed time, I guess I was expecting more of a "Welcome to Spa Indrani. Would you be Ms Nekochan, etc, etc"

Anyway, they served the customary ginger tea with hot towel and then gave me a form to complete. Talk about tiresome. After that, we went through the treatment I booked. Do note that if you book a package and would like to change one of the items, eg. Massage A to Massage B which costs the same in the ala carte menu, they WON'T change it unless you pay a surcharge. I think this is ridiculous because in all the other spas I have been, I've never had a problems substituting treatments that cost the same. Spa partner told me that it probably has to do with the margins .i.e. as part of the package (which is normally discounted already) they give you the treatments that have the highest margin even though in the ala carte menu they cost the same.

We were led to the treatment rooms. Now, seeing this was a house in previous life, the rooms are little funny. It's like you go through one door which leads you to a corridor and off that are 2 rooms (one for couples and one for single) and a bathroom.

The masseuse asked us to change but it was really weird because while we were in the room, they didn't close the door to the room while they waited in the corridor. During the treatments as well, the door to the room was not closed. I'm assuming that once one of the rooms in the area is used, no one comes in and out of the area but I still felt as if my privacy was being compromised.

Started the session with the body scrub which was ok, nothing to shout about. But the funny part was when it came to washing off the scrub you have to go to the bathroom and you have to walk through the corridor in your towel. Again, I know the area is cordoned off by another door so no one will actually come and see me run to the bathroom but it's still weird.

The bathroom is like a regular home bathroom and you feel sort of bad dirtying it because someone will have to clean it later.

After the scrub, we were led to what I think used to be the servant's quarters at the back of the house. Now, if I thought running through the corridor was weird, I think walking across the public lobby area, through the patio, pass the side of the house and air-cond compressors to the back to this other room where the steam room is located was even weirder!!! We were like naked underneath except for this short batik robe and Japanes slippers. Another grouse about the slippers is that we wore the same one in and out of the house and treatment rooms, etc ... ok, so I have this thing about (as my Japanese home-mother explained to me when I was in Japan) outside dirt vs inside dirt i.e. slippers for outside the house, slippers for inside the house like the Chinese and their seperate brooms for upstairs and downstairs. Anyway, I digress again ...

The steam room was nice with a spa in it as well, it would have been great if they could do massages in there as well. Little stone pebbles covered the floor and lots of candles everywhere.

The massage and head/scalp "treatment' was back in the original room in the house. I didn't really like the room because it was too bright. While they had bamboo blinds but the sunlight still came through and the massage beds were metal ones which didn't mesh with the ambience and when put my face through the hole in the bed, there was no flower-in-the-water-bowl for me to look at. Ok, so I've been spoilt by spas in Thailand and Bali, but it's these little little details that make the spa user experience.

They didn't ask what scent we wanted for the aromatheraphy massage but just assumed everyone wanted lemongrass (this, compared to Mandara Spa where there's a whole ritual on choosing the scent ...). The massage was pretty good and by the time she started massaging my face (with the same lemongrass body oil -which is not recommended for sensitive skin!!) and head, I was lost in La-La land.. thus, I am unable to review the head/scalp treatment but I suspect it should have just been labeled head massage!!

They have a new treatment at Spa Indrani, which is basically soaking your feet in this special foot bath thing which will detoxify your body. Now, detoxify seems to be in the in word these days and used by everyone to sell every health product known to man. Anyway, put your feet in the foot bath for 30 minutes and watch the water change to some tea like color. If you're a smoker and alchoholic, it will turn black it seems. Well, mine just look like Teh-O-Kaw so I guess I'm not that toxic!! The product is called Platinum Detox (www.platinumdetox.com)

Cost
Spa Indrani isn't your cheapest spa in town, catering to mainly expat crowd - can be judged by the number of Japanese magazines and menus in Japanese as well with full time Japanese employee, if I'm not mistaken.

The package that I chose was slightly less than RM400 for the scrub, massage, foot bath, ginger tea, etc. However, mistake was not to ask how much the foot detoxify thing cost because that was RM170 per pax - for putting my feet in a bath and watching the water turn brown!! I though that was a bit much but then again, my mistake for not asking!!

Would I go back again?
Probably not, because I felt it wasn't very welcoming, the place wasn't as cosy and inviting as some other spas I've been to. Oh ya, I was also thoroughly bitten by mosquitoes!!!

PS. If you want to try the Platinum Detox, many places like small pharmacies are offering it for much less. At the Vitacare Pharmacy at Ikano Power Center, the first trial is RM80 and subsequent treatments are RM100 per session. 6 sessions are recommended to "fully detoxify your body"

They also have a 6-hour package on offer for one month for only RM310... Sumatran Ceremony of Dreams - Foot soak & scrub; Reflexology, Hair treatment; Facial; Body Scrub; Massage and Flower Bath. You will be provided with Jamu Juice to start, a lunch of Indonesian delicacies, and you will finish with a Herbal Tea.

I can tell you from experience that the half day and whole day packages are excellent!! If you want a day of pampering, this is the treatment for you!! Bring along a friend or two (they can only cater for 3-4 people maximum)...

If you only have an hour or two.. then try the reflexology - rave reviews from those who have had it... and so gentle lah! (doesn't hurt!!), or the head, back and shoulder massage is great, as are any of the massages. You and your friends can head down for a little pampering before or after lunch!

Or bring your husband/partner along for an hour's afternoon/evening of delight with simple pampering on feet or head, shoulder & back.

All products used are homemade, using natural ingredients. The products made are also available for sale, if you wish to try using them at home.
